Joan Ford is the wife of the late Whitey Ford, an American professional baseball pitcher who played his entire 16-year Major League Baseball (MLB) career with the New York Yankees. Ford was born on October 21, 1928, in Manhattan, New York City, and died on October 8, 2020, in Lake Success, New York at 91 years old. He was a ten-time All-Star and six-time World Series champion.
In the year 1961, Ford won both the Cy Young Award and World Series Most Valuable Player Award. He led the American League (AL) in wins three times and in earned run average (ERA) twice. Ford is the Yankees franchise leader in career wins (236), shutouts (45), innings pitched (3,170 1⁄3), and games started by a pitcher (438; tied with Andy Pettitte). He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in the year 1974.
Whitey signed with the Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1947 and made his major league debut in the year 1950. Following a two-year sojourn to serve in the United States Army during the Korean War, Ford returned to the Yankees in 1953 and pitched for them until retiring in the year 1967.
